Placement Test for PreAlgebra

There is nothing on this test that is intended to be tricky.  The  * means multiply, 6*6 = 36.

If you do not see an exponent in problems #5,  15, 16, 17  then stop and email me about this. 

Please show a little work on each problem where possible.

DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR.   I need to understand what you know when you are working without any type of math help.  If you can not do these without a calculator then you are not ready for Prealgebra nor any other high school math.

 

Complete test  within 1 hour, but do finish it.   Tell me the time that you took.

 

Reduce all fractions to their lowest terms.

 

1.  Evaluate:  48 5/6 + 13 2/3  =       These are mixed  numbers, that is, a  whole number and fraction.

 

2.  Evaluate:  5 -  3 1/2 =

 

3.  Evaluate:   58  3/ 7  - 12  6/ 7 =     

 

4.  Evaluate:   35 1/2 divided by 7 5/6 =

 

5.  Simplify:  3 +4(5)2  =

 Hint: You need to recall the Order of Operations for math here.

 

6.  Simplify:    40 divided by 0.05 =

 

7.  Simplify:    400 times 0.05

 

8.  Simplify:    7800 divided by 1000

 

9.  Simplify:     0.780 times 100

 

10.  Simplify   2 + [ 12 - 4] + 3( 4 +5) =

 

11.  Simplify     4x  - 2x + 5 + 9x  =

 

12.  Translate to an expression and then find the number: the product  of 5 and the square of a 9.

 

13.  Add:  5.268  + 45.79

 

14.  Subtract:   138.9 - 56.7643

 

15.  Add:   (1.2 x 103) + (2.9 x 102)

 

16.  Multiply   ( 5.6 x103 ) (2.9 x 102)

 

17. .Divide  (2.8 x 108) by   ( 7 x103 )

 

18.  180 is 70% of what number? tell me what you did to get this

 

19.  375 is what percent of  625?  tell me what you did to get this

 

20.  35% of a class is girls.  There are 120 children in the class.

 How many boys are there? tell me or show me what you did to get this

 

21.  Find the Least Common Multiple for 16, 28 and  21. 

The LCM is a number that can be evenly divided by each of these.

 

22. Find the mean of these numbers:   17, 24, 35, 37, 38, 26, 37, 50.

 

23.  Find the median of the numbers in problem 22.

 

24.  Find the range of the numbers in problem 22.

                    

25.  Find the mode of the numbers in problem 22  

          

26.  Find the percent of increase for the price of a car if its 2003 price was

        $16,000 and the price now will be $17,280.

 

27.  Simplify:    0.0719 +  8 =

 

28.   Find the area of a rectangle whose length is 16 feet and width is 25 feet.

 

29.  Find the perimeter of a parallelogram whose base is 18 feet and height is 6 feet

        and slanted side is 10 feet.

 

30.   A circle has a diameter or 12 inches.   

    a.  Find its radius.           b.  Find its circumference.            c.  Find its area.
